Superstitions and the reasons behind them

We all have heard of those superstitions most probably from our grandparents and sometimes from our parents as well which we always ignore. But, are they really true? Well, I also used to think that these things are just some useless myths made by ancient people without any logic. And, one day something happened which exposed me to to the realities of these so-called superstitions.

So, my parents always say not to sleep with my head facing north or west and I just used to ignore them. Even the bed in my room is also aligned in the East to West direction so that I always sleep pointing my head towards the East. But, for the last few days, I was sleeping with my head pointing towards the northwest direction because in that way I feel the maximum air from the fan. Though it was relaxing sleeping just below the fan, I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't sleep with ease afterward. This happened for a couple of days, and then I wondered if this really happening because of sleeping in the wrong direction? I googled out for the issues with sleeping in the north and the west direction and to my surprise, there are actually some real issues associated with it. We all know that earth has its own magnetic field that goes from the South pole to the North pole. Also, our blood contains iron, so we are supposed to align ourselves in a direction opposite to the direction of the Earth's magnetic field so that the iron in the blood does not get accumulated in the brain. This explanation made me curious that the other sayings which I thought were superstitions could also have a practical explanation. So, I just looked out for the real reason behind every myth.

Now, I don't want to make this very long, so I'm not writing about everything.  Still, I'm sharing some of the common so-called superstitions and their actual explanation.

1. Eat curd and sugar before heading out for an important task

Well, this is the most common thing in a typical Indian family. And our generation doesn't really like this. But the real reason behind it is that curd has a cooling effect on the stomach and the sugar provides instant glucose. So, this leads to better peace of mind and enthusiasm and lastly an increased probability of success.

2.  Don't wash or cut your hairs on certain days

This one does not have any scientific explanation behind it. Rather, during early times, it was one of the water management practices. Moreover, barbers used to be on holiday on those days.

3. Throwing coins in fountains and rivers bring good fortune

In ancient times, coins were made of copper and science has it that copper has antimicrobial properties and can kill 99.9% of infection-causing bacteria. So, our forefathers practiced this to ensure they were consuming pure water. Anyways, today neither the coins are made of copper nor we directly drink from the river, so this belief is leading to water pollution in today's time.

Like these, there are numerous superstitions and all have a reason behind them. So, next time when your elders point out these things, don't just ignore them.

Have a great day!
